Principal's Message

Thank you for visiting the New Designs Charter School’s Website.

On behalf of the New Designs Charter School community, I would like to welcome you to another academic year. I am expecting this year to be an exciting time as our faculty, administration and support staff strive to enhance the learning environment at this great school. I encourage our students to take advantage of the rich academic environment the school provides to study hard and get involved in the extracurricular activities the school offers.

At New Designs Charter School, we believe that schools should create a culture and climate of care, commitment, collaboration, and continuous improvement. We also believe that the critical purpose of the educational system is to improve learning for all students so that they may use their minds well and become productive and responsible citizens. No one enunciated this axiom better than the learned civil right leader, W.E.B. Du Bois, when he wrote in The Freedom to Learn in 1949:

"Of all the civil rights for which the world has struggled and fought for 5,000 years, the right to learn is undoubtedly the most fundamental.... The freedom to learn... has been bought by bitter sacrifice. And whatever we may think of the curtailment of other civil rights, we should fight to the last ditch to keep open the right to learn, the right to have examined in our schools not only what we believe, but what we do not believe; not only what our leaders say, but what the leaders of other groups and nations, and the leaders of other centuries have said. We must insist upon this to give our children the fairness of a start which will equip them with such an array of facts and such an attitude toward truth that they can have a real chance to judge what the world is and what its greater minds have thought it might be. "

It is against this background that the New Designs Charter School offers rigorous curriculum and instruction to challenge the minds of our inner-city students. We have established high learning standards and defined instructional practices and structures that result in all students learning at a high level. We believe that all students CAN learn and WILL learn. At New Designs, we require all our high school graduates to meet or exceed the UC A-G admission requirements. As the founder of our school recently said in his speech in Manhattan Beach, “What we need in our schools are higher requirements and not only higher expectations.” At New Designs, our goal is to prepare a more diverse group of students to learn at much higher levels, deal with complex issues, use technologies and work collaboratively to dialogue, frame and solve challenging problems.
