MRS. KIM SMITH, M.A. Ed

A fixture in the culture and operations of New Designs Charter School, Mrs. Kim Smith is a well respected member of the New Designs organization. For over nine years, Mrs. Smith has shown her dedication and commitment to the cause of raising the expectations of inner-city youth within the NDCS structure. Her abilities have fostered growth in the staff and management of the University Park campus; as well as in the matriculate educational process of the students that the campus serves.

Born in Houston Texas, Mrs. Smith’s family moved to the city of Los Angeles when she was very young and she was educated and excelled in the Los Angeles Unified School District; as evidenced in her graduating from University High School a year ahead of her class. After attending and graduating from Prairie View A & M University, Mrs. Smith returned to Los Angeles where she was employed by the County of Los Angeles. Mrs. Smith returned to school and completed her graduate student program at California State University Dominguez Hills receiving Masters Degree in Education.

Mrs. Smith’s initial education opportunity was Normandie Ave Elementary School where she worked for 8 years as a teacher for both 1st and 3rdgrades teacher. She then took a short break from teaching and began working for Los Angeles County of Education (LACOE). A burning desire for more lasting and personal interaction with students led her back to the classroom which consequently began her career with the New Designs family; first as a Technology Teacher and subsequently and currently as the Assistant Principal of the University Park campus.

Mrs. Smith’s stern and disciplined demeanor masks a passion to assist young people and facilitate social responsibility and growth. Known as the “mother “ of the school, the students of NDCS know that just like a natural mother they can expect fair discipline and nurturing care from their Assistant Principal. Her co-educators acknowledge and respect her leadership ability; and parents admire her willingness to partner with them.
