Introduction: The Extended Learning Academy aims to supplement the student’s language and math experience through tutoring and academic assistance in an intimate learning environment. By supplement, we aim to provide support for the New Designs curriculum and instructional goals that the student must master. By tutoring, we aim to provide content specialists who can, for example, work with students on conceptual, computational, compositional, and mechanical aspects of mathematics and language development. By academic assistance, we aim to provide instructional specialists, who are able to teach, re-teach, explain, and re-explain aspects of the students’ language and math experiences at the Extended Learning Academy. While this process is designed to clarify the student’s learning experience, the critical point is to provide this experience in a setting that sets the stage for the teachable moment to happen. The unique characteristics that situate the learner and teacher in a place for clarity and understanding to happen are: Smaller class size Specific learning objectives Supplementary support of course aims. Subject matter expertise Consistent and timely feedback. Staff: Our unique blend of New Designs instructors and tutors from the University of Southern California and Mt. Saint Mary’s College have resulted in high quality instruction and yielded positive results. Offerings: Math –Basic Math to Calculus English-6th to 12th Grade Homework assistance.
